Meta's Muse app hits 10.2 million U.S. downloads in just 40 days, a milestone few apps achieve. Muse also shows stronger user retention and engagement compared to rival AI apps like ChatGPT and Claude.
Meta has achieved significant success with its AI companion app Muse, which has reached 10.9 million downloads worldwide, including 10.2 million in the U.S., within 40 days of its September launch, according to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. This remarkable early adoption places Muse among an exclusive group of only 12 mobile apps to hit 10 million U.S. downloads in such a brief span, joining titles like Fortnite, Pokémon GO, Disney+, and Meta's own Threads app.
Sensor Tower’s senior insights analyst Kara Lee noted that most apps reaching this scale have traditionally been mobile games, highlighting Muse’s achievement in the consumer AI space. While Meta benefits from marketing Muse across its extensive family of apps—boasting 3.6 billion daily active users—the company has also substantially increased its advertising investment in Muse. October’s advertising spend toward Muse rose to 39% of Meta’s total advertising budget, up from 23% in September, helping position the app as the 21st largest U.S. brand by ad impressions.
Beyond strong downloads, Muse demonstrates impressive user retention. It maintains a 30% seven-day and 23% fourteen-day retention rate in the U.S., outperforming competitors such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, who average 19% and 16% respectively over the same periods. Furthermore, Muse surpassed 2.5 million daily active users on October 16, marking a 15% increase from the previous week.
Muse’s rapid rise also includes topping charts, holding the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store almost continuously since launch and leading on Google Play over the past month. While ChatGPT amassed roughly 15 million global downloads in its first 40 days, Muse’s availability is currently limited to the U.S. and Canada, making Muse’s U.S. market penetration particularly notable.
Meta’s Muse stands out not only for its initial popularity but also for stronger sustained engagement, affirming its competitive position in the burgeoning AI app ecosystem.
