Mayor Zohran Mamdani urges New Yorkers to resist AI's inevitability and push for regulations, criticizing federal abdication on AI oversight and promoting local policies to protect public interests.

At an event hosted by the AI Now Institute in Manhattan, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stressed the importance of local resistance to the rapid, unchecked spread of artificial intelligence technology. Speaking alongside activist and actress Ilana Glazer, Mamdani rejected the narrative that AI's expansion—impacting jobs, education, and social dignity—is unavoidable. Instead, he called on New Yorkers to reclaim control through public pressure and regulation.

Mamdani's remarks come amid minimal federal oversight of AI development and deployment. He condemned what he termed the "complete abdication of federal law" regarding AI, criticizing federal discourse that frames AI innovation as a national competition, particularly with China, while sidelining public safety and ethical concerns.

Highlighting concrete local actions, Mamdani recalled his recent ban on AI use in New York's elementary and middle schools, a move that resonated with Glazer, who expressed unease about AI's non-consensual introduction into classrooms. The mayor also introduced an AI transparency policy requiring landlords and real estate platforms to disclose AI-generated images in property listings, aiming to protect consumers from deception.

Mamdani emphasized the dangers of "reckless adoption of technology" without due consideration of AI's limits, citing a tragic February U.S. military strike in Iran where flawed AI targeting led to over 150 deaths, including children. He criticized AI companies' tendency to present their technology as infallible and immune from external regulation, likening it to previous excuses made by social media companies to avoid accountability.

Noting that major AI firms like Anthropic and OpenAI plan public offerings soon, Mamdani warned of conflicts between commercial interests and public safety. He urged a new framework for AI governance beyond the current federal administration, advocating for stronger accountability and protective regulation at the city and state levels if federal leadership remains absent.

The mayor’s stance reflects growing concerns among experts and whistleblowers within top AI labs about existential risks posed by artificial intelligence. Mamdani’s call to action highlights the urgent need for local jurisdictions to forge policies that safeguard their citizens amid a void in national AI governance.
