Electric vehicle maker Rivian has purchased UK startup Third Dimension, utilizing its AI-based 3D world technology to improve autonomous driving simulations and accelerate self-driving system development.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has acquired Third Dimension, a UK-based startup specializing in AI technology that transforms images and videos into detailed 3D worlds. Founded in 2024 by veterans from the gaming and autonomous vehicle sectors, Third Dimension was originally aimed at accelerating video game development but recognized broader applications in areas such as defense and autonomous vehicles.

Rivian plans to integrate Third Dimension's technology into its autonomy and AI team to convert real-world data into lifelike 3D environments. This will support the development of its advanced driver-assistance features and the self-driving capabilities intended for its forthcoming robotaxi service, which Rivian aims to supply to Uber.

Simulation plays a pivotal role in training and validating autonomous driving systems. Traditional simulators mostly rely on rendering engines or video game platforms and use synthetic data, which creates a gap compared to real-world conditions. Third Dimension's AI-driven approach bridges this gap by matching simulations closely to physical environments.

Rivian's strength lies in its extensive real-world driving data, collected from tens of thousands of its vehicles—including R1S pickup trucks and SUVs and delivery vans. These vehicles contribute over 400,000 driving sequences daily, aggregated and anonymized to form training models for autonomous driving.

By leveraging Third Dimension’s technology alongside this vast dataset, Rivian can simulate complex and rare driving scenarios without waiting for those conditions to occur naturally on the road. This advancement promises to accelerate the development and robustness of Rivian's autonomous driving systems.

The acquisition not only expands Rivian's technological capabilities but also grows its AI hub in London. The Third Dimension team, consisting of around 15 employees, will be absorbed into Rivian's autonomy and AI division, further strengthening the company's expertise in AI-powered driving solutions.

This move underlines Rivian's commitment to becoming a leader in autonomous vehicle technology by combining innovative AI with extensive real-world data to improve simulation fidelity and accelerate self-driving progress.
