Google introduces a self-paced AI training certificate designed by clinicians to help healthcare workers manage administrative tasks efficiently, allowing more focus on patient care while earning continuing education credits.
Google has unveiled the Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate, a new self-paced training program created by clinicians at Google to equip healthcare professionals with practical skills in using artificial intelligence responsibly. Launched to address the growing administrative burdens faced by medical staff, the course emphasizes tools that streamline non-clinical tasks, enabling clinicians to dedicate more time to patient care.
Announced by Dr. Michael Howell, Google's Chief Health Officer, the program offers about five hours of flexible learning tailored to busy schedules. It focuses on AI applications such as summarizing emails, explaining complex medical information to patients in accessible terms, organizing research, and managing scheduling without needing coding expertise. Participants can earn up to 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ upon completion.
The curriculum was developed by a diverse team of Google clinicians with expertise spanning internal medicine, pediatrics, critical care, emergency medicine, and public health. It aligns with evolving standards like the Association of American Medical Colleges' AI Competencies to ensure relevance and rigor. The course content prioritizes patient safety, privacy, and responsible clinical judgment when integrating AI into daily workflows.
Leading medical and nursing schools including NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Touro University, and Purdue University School of Nursing have incorporated this certificate into training for faculty, residents, and students. This reflects a wider recognition of the need for dedicated AI education amid industry-wide pressures. For instance, nearly one in three registered nurses has considered leaving due to workload stresses, while 90% of physicians seek formal training to optimize AI use.
By reducing time spent on routine paperwork and administrative tasks, the program aims to restore clinicians’ focus on patient interaction and care quality. It also supports lifelong learning by helping health professionals efficiently digest clinical research and prepare for certifications.
