A new Windows 11 preview update introduces customizable right-click menus and a cloud-based recovery option, coinciding with a reported decline in Windows OEM revenue due to sluggish PC sales.

Microsoft has begun rolling out a preview update for Windows 11 aimed at addressing long-standing user complaints about the operating system’s right-click context menus. The update, labeled KB5127936 and targeting Windows 11 versions 26H2 and 25H2, introduces a "customize menu" feature that empowers users to control which commands appear when right-clicking. This allows toggling of built-in commands such as "Send To" or "Create Shortcut," rearranging menu items, and managing third-party extensions shown in both the main and submenus. Previously, Microsoft had reorganized command locations, hiding familiar options behind an additional click and replacing them with icon rows, which frustrated power users accustomed to older layouts.

Alongside this usability enhancement, the update unveils Cloud Rebuild, a recovery method enabling Windows 11 to be reinstalled directly from the cloud, even on systems that fail to boot. This method retrieves the Windows image and necessary drivers from Windows Update, eliminating the need for external recovery media or custom images. Notably, Cloud Rebuild acts more like a fresh installation than a repair operation, as it does not preserve existing applications or files; users concerned with data privacy can opt to sanitize the entire drive before reinstalling.

These improvements coincide with Microsoft’s recent financial report showing a significant decline in its Windows OEM revenue segment—falling by 27 to 28 percent in constant currency year-over-year—primarily due to decreased new PC demand, inventory clearing by original equipment manufacturers and channel partners, and the end of Windows 10 support-related purchases last year. The broader Windows OEM and devices category, which includes Microsoft Surface hardware, dropped 22 percent. Microsoft's CFO indicated these trends are expected to persist through the fiscal year. However, growth in other sectors such as Azure cloud services (up 48 percent) and overall Microsoft Cloud revenue (up 30 percent) partly offset the slump in Windows licensing.

Historically, Windows context menus have faced criticism for their cluttered and inconsistent layouts, legacy design issues, and difficulty in managing third-party app integrations. Windows 11 sought to streamline these menus by placing common commands close to the cursor and grouping related actions, with an option to access the full legacy menu via a "Show more options" choice. The recent update formalizes user customization capabilities, enhancing efficiency and user satisfaction.

The addition of Cloud Rebuild aligns with modern recovery needs, simplifying device restoration without additional tools but does require acceptance of data loss unless preventative measures are taken. These features collectively represent Microsoft’s continued efforts to refine Windows 11 usability and recovery—addressing user feedback while navigating challenging PC market conditions.
