Google Gemini chat app introduces in-chat file generation and editing for Google Docs, Sheets, PDFs, slides, Markdown, TXT, and code, enhancing productivity with full-screen editing and interactive text highlights.
Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini chat app, enabling users to generate, preview, and directly edit various file types within the chat interface. As of October 29, 2026, users can work with PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code without leaving Gemini. These enhancements aim to streamline document creation and refinement processes by integrating advanced editing tools directly into conversations.
The new features allow users to expand documents to a full-screen view for comprehensive editing. Additionally, Gemini supports interactive text highlighting—users can select sections within files to pose questions or prompt edits. For instance, extracting data tables and asking Gemini to convert them into graphs is now possible, enhancing data visualization directly within the chat.
PDF previews and editing are accessible on both the web and mobile platforms, whereas editing of other file formats is currently limited to the web version. This update builds on earlier Gemini functions that let users generate and download files; previously, edits required switching to dedicated applications. Now, Gemini offers seamless integration that fosters a more efficient workflow.
Google showcases these capabilities with examples such as generating a PDF study guide from handwritten lecture notes. Users can manually edit these guides, highlight content to request text or visual modifications, and even use the app to ask additional questions related to the content.
These enhancements are available to all Gemini users worldwide in all supported languages. The development reflects Google’s commitment to embedding powerful AI-driven tools within everyday productivity applications, competing with similar offerings like Anthropic’s Claude, which also enables document generation and editing through chat interfaces.
By blending document creation, editing, and interactive AI assistance, Google Gemini transforms how users handle their files, making the chat app a versatile hub for both communication and productivity.
