Nissan's 2027 Rogue Hybrid debuts in the US featuring an updated e-Power series hybrid system that drives like an EV but uses a gasoline engine solely to charge its battery, eliminating plug-in charging.
Nissan has launched the 2027 Rogue Hybrid SUV in the United States, equipped with its latest e-Power series hybrid system, retuned specifically for American driving conditions. Unlike conventional parallel hybrids where the gasoline engine and electric motor both drive the wheels, the e-Power system operates as a series hybrid. Here, the engine functions exclusively as a generator to charge the traction battery, which then powers electric motors that propel the vehicle.
At the heart of this system is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine producing 148 horsepower, optimized to run at a steady speed for efficient battery charging rather than driver demand. This allows it to achieve an impressive thermal efficiency of 42%. The engine charges a 1.67 kWh lithium-ion battery designed for high charge and discharge responsiveness.
Two permanent synchronous motors power the SUV—202 hp at the front axle and 134 hp at the rear—delivering a combined output of 225 hp. Regenerative braking helps recoup energy during deceleration. The system's setup closely resembles the drive feel of a pure electric vehicle, offering immediate throttle response and a single-pedal driving mode for ease and efficiency.
The 2027 Rogue Hybrid, priced starting at $41,490 for the initial SR trim with Tech Package, targets drivers seeking EV-like smoothness without range anxiety or plug charging. Nissan will expand the lineup in January with SV and Platinum trims priced competitively against rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Other highlights include a spacious interior with numerous physical controls, a 14.3-inch touchscreen running Android Automotive OS, and enhanced integration supporting Google Maps via Apple CarPlay. The carefully designed “Zero Gravity” seats provide exceptional comfort, aiming to minimize driver fatigue.
Fuel economy estimates show 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, making it a strong contender in the hybrid SUV segment. The e-Power system's long tenure in Japan—over 1.4 million vehicles—demonstrates Nissan's experience, while this US version is recalibrated for more demanding acceleration and vehicle weight.
Overall, the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid combines a refined electric driving feel with the convenience of not needing to plug in, showcasing a distinct approach in the hybrid SUV market.
