Akai's upcoming MPC Sample Key offers a 37-key keyboard aimed at pitched sample playback, featuring chord, arpeggiator, and looper modes, with plans to open-source its software for community mods. Launch date and pricing remain unannounced.
Akai has revealed early details about its forthcoming MPC Sample Key, a new musical instrument designed to extend the capabilities of its sample-based music production line. Unlike its predecessor, the MPC Sample, which was geared more toward drum sample chopping, the Sample Key focuses on pitched sample playback facilitated by its 37-key keyboard. This design shift signals an emphasis on melodic and harmonic content creation rather than purely rhythmic functions.
Images exclusively obtained by The Verge showcase several distinctive features of the MPC Sample Key. While it retains some controls familiar from the MPC Sample, such as three context-sensitive encoders and a large main encoder, it omits the traditional 'chop' button, reinforcing its different performance intent. Instead, it provides dedicated pitch and modulation wheels, alongside buttons labeled 'chord' and 'arp,' presumably activating chord playback and arpeggiator modes. These functions would be well-suited to creating melodic and bass lines, contrasting with the drum-focused chopping capabilities of its predecessor.
Additional features include octave range-changing buttons, allowing flexible keyboard pitch control. A dedicated looper is also present, intended to facilitate live performance and layering of sounds in real-time. This could be particularly useful for musicians looking to build complex arrangements on the fly.
Notably, the MPC Sample Key houses a built-in microphone and speaker, enabling standalone music production without additional gear. The control panel suggests the presence of MIDI and CV outputs, enabling integration with modular synthesizers and other external instruments, expanding its versatility for various studio or live setups.
Akai has announced plans to open-source the MPC Sample Key's software. This move invites the modding community to independently develop and customize the device's capabilities, potentially fostering a broad ecosystem of user-generated enhancements and hacks.
Details about pricing and the official release date have yet to be disclosed, but the disclosed features position the MPC Sample Key as a unique hybrid instrument bridging sample playback, performance flexibility, and open-source innovation in electronic music production.
