Elon Musk has pledged to give one SpaceX share to every child in the US next year, potentially distributing shares worth over $10 billion, though distribution details remain undisclosed.

Elon Musk announced a significant philanthropic initiative to give a share of SpaceX stock to every child in the United States starting next year. The innovative pledge was disclosed via his social media platform, X, where Musk stated, "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America," adding that this effort would be "the first of many."

The plan emerged shortly after AI company Anthropic made a separate announcement on dedicating part of its equity to public benefit programs. Musk’s initiative, however, is notably ambitious in scale. Based on Census Bureau data, about 73 million children reside in the US. With SpaceX’s closing share price at $146.03 on October 16, 2026, the total value of such a giveaway could approximate $10.7 billion.

Despite the vast potential impact, Musk has not yet disclosed how the shares will be allocated or funded. A recent regulatory filing from August 2026 indicated Musk holds a 48.4% stake in SpaceX. Earlier that year, SpaceX went public, raising $75 billion through an IPO that briefly elevated Musk to the status of the world’s first trillionaire.

This pledge underscores Musk’s commitment to distributing wealth derived from his ventures more broadly. It also aligns with a growing trend among tech companies to channel equity toward public benefit goals. For comparison, Anthropic recently committed 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund aimed at addressing issues like AI-driven employment disruptions. Anthropic’s fund is designed to be flexible and scalable, with provisions for increasing share allocations based on company valuation increases.

While Musk’s announcement has captured widespread attention, many specifics remain unconfirmed, including the mechanisms for delivering shares to millions of children and the long-term sustainability of the plan. It is also unclear how this pledge fits within SpaceX’s overall corporate governance and shareholder framework.

Nevertheless, this major pledge signals a new approach to leveraging private company equity for public welfare, one that may influence future philanthropic and corporate strategies in the US and beyond.
