Google will turn off Search and AI tools for K-12 students by default unless school administrators enable them, reflecting concerns over AI's role in education. Guided Learning features offering step-by-step problem-solving support are being introduced in select schools.
Google has announced a significant policy change for its educational services, impacting K-12 public school students in the United States. According to statements from Google’s education leadership and updates in November 2026, the company will completely disable access to Google Search and its AI-powered tools—including Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Gemini in Classroom—for school student accounts unless administrators explicitly activate them.
Chris Phillips, VP and General Manager of Education at Google, explained that AI is deeply integrated into Google Search technology, making it impossible to offer Search independently from AI features. Consequently, schools that choose not to enable AI functionalities will no longer have access to Search, with students seeing messages indicating its unavailability. This shift follows concerns around the introduction of AI in classrooms, including skepticism from educators and lawmakers regarding potential negative effects on student learning and assessment integrity.
In aiming to enhance educational outcomes responsibly, Google has also launched Guided Learning capabilities within Google Classroom and is piloting them in Google Search at select schools. Guided Learning is designed as a coaching tool that encourages students to think critically by walking them through complex problems via open-ended questions and stepwise prompts, rather than providing direct answers. This approach supports productive struggle, fostering deeper understanding and reducing reliance on shortcuts.
These features are currently being tested in select US schools, with plans for broader expansion after educator feedback is incorporated. Alongside, Google is evolving administrative controls to give school leaders the ability to enable or disable AI products based on their pedagogical priorities.
This development reflects Google’s effort to balance technological innovation with responsible AI use in education, working closely with schools, teachers, and policymakers. While AI integration aims to supplement traditional learning, the complete disabling of Search where AI is refused marks a stringent stance that may affect schools wary of implementing AI tools due to privacy, ethical, or instructional concerns.
The company intends to provide further guidance to schools in the coming months to facilitate a smooth transition. As educational institutions adapt to these policies, the debate over AI’s role in classrooms is set to continue, with implications for how digital learning tools are adopted nationwide.
