Anthropic has modified Claude Code’s system prompt to prevent the AI tool from recreating existing video games, aiming to reduce IP infringement while still supporting original game development.

Anthropic, the AI research company behind Claude, has implemented changes to Claude Code’s system prompt designed to restrict its ability to reproduce existing video games. This update comes amid a surge in AI-generated decompilations, recompilations, and ports of retro games, which have raised intellectual property concerns. According to The Verge, Anthropic’s revision instructs Claude Code to avoid recreating specific games, even if they are explicitly named or called original, while still allowing users to create games within genres or from their own unique designs and assets.

A user on the social platform X shared a screenshot showing the added prompt language emphasizing originality and discouraging game cloning. Anthropic’s representative Addy Osmani confirmed the change in the system prompt introduced with the Opus 5.5 update. Osmani emphasized that using Claude to infringe on intellectual property rights violates Anthropic’s usage policy. He added that the company will continue refining the model to balance preventing infringement with enabling creativity. Users experiencing wrongful denials of their own original content are encouraged to contact Anthropic directly.

This action reflects a broader industry challenge as AI tools become capable of replicating complex creative works like video games, complicating copyright enforcement. While Anthropic is aiming to prevent direct cloning, it continues to support the use of Claude Code to generate new, original video game projects. Currently, it remains unconfirmed whether similar prompt updates will be applied to other Claude models or interfaces. Anthropic has not provided details on mechanisms beyond the prompt update used to enforce these guidelines.

As AI-generated content grows prevalent in gaming communities, companies like Anthropic are taking cautious steps to uphold intellectual property laws while fostering innovation. The update to Claude Code represents one such effort to ensure developers can safely use AI tools without unintentionally infringing on existing games.
