Nexus Mods now requires mod creators to disclose AI use in their new uploads, aiming to enhance transparency while allowing AI-assisted content under clear labeling and new site controls.

Nexus Mods, the leading repository for PC gaming modifications, is implementing a new policy requiring mod authors to disclose the use of artificial intelligence in their work. Announced on November 4, 2026, this move addresses community concerns about the unclear role of AI in mod creation and aims to increase transparency across the platform.

Under the updated guidelines, any mod uploaded to Nexus Mods must include a statement indicating whether AI was involved in its development. If a mod is tagged as “AI-assisted,” its creators must provide a public explanation detailing how and where AI tools were used in the creative process. Moreover, AI-related tags will be made more prominent on mod pages, helping users easily identify modifications that incorporate AI-generated or AI-influenced elements.

Victor “Foledinho” Folmann, owner of Nexus Mods, emphasized the platform’s support for human creativity while rejecting an outright ban on AI-generated mods. He explained that AI currently plays a pervasive role across many stages of content development—from script autocompletion to texture and asset creation—making it impractical and counterproductive to exclude all AI use. Rather than banning AI, the platform prefers open labeling and regulation aligning with their new rules.

In addition, Nexus Mods pledges not to use mods as training data for AI models, nor will they sell or license mod content for such purposes. They are also working on improving controls related to mod reuse, including better attribution protocols when mods incorporate work from other authors with permission.

Addressing a surge in rapid mod production, partly fueled by AI tools, Nexus Mods is adjusting its Recently Added section to prevent spamming of uploads by single authors. Measures include limiting the number of mods shown per author and enforcing stricter upload restrictions for new accounts. The site is also introducing user options to hide AI-generated content from game pages and the homepage, with plans to extend this filtering to search results soon.

Existing mods have a 60-day grace period, ending January 2, 2027, for authors to comply with the new AI disclosure requirements. Post-deadline, Nexus Mods will begin strict enforcement of these policies to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the modding community.

These updates mark a significant step in integrating AI into gaming culture responsibly, balancing innovation with clear communication and respect for original creators. Nexus Mods' full AI policy is publicly available for user review and feedback.
