Nintendo announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2, preserving its classic gameplay while updating graphics and controls for modern audiences. The game launches on November 5, 2026.

Nintendo has announced a highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for its upcoming Switch 2 console, set for release on November 5, 2026. Originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, Ocarina of Time is one of the most influential titles in the Zelda series, marking the franchise’s pivotal transition into 3D gaming. This remake aims to honor the original experience while updating visuals and gameplay to meet modern standards.

The core story remains unchanged: players control Link, a young forest dweller, embarking on a quest to save the fantasy land of Hyrule from the villain Ganondorf. Central to the gameplay is the magical ocarina, a musical instrument that allows Link to manipulate the environment by changing the weather, warping across the map, and altering time.

Significant updates include a visually striking overhaul that blends fantasy art with realism. The world of Hyrule now features highly detailed, lifelike environments, such as flowing water and swaying grass, while character models are designed with a stylized, puppet-theater aesthetic. This creates a unique visual identity distinct from the cel-shaded and Studio Ghibli-inspired aesthetics seen in other recent Zelda games.

Gameplay improvements address long-standing issues from the original. Players now have full camera control with the right stick, enhancing navigation and combat awareness. Link can jump freely, unlike the original game where jumps were contextually restricted. Item management is streamlined through the D-pad for quick access, and a new quest-tracking tool called “threads of time” helps players stay oriented.

Notably, the notorious Water Temple dungeon has been reworked to reduce frustration associated with the original’s mechanics. The updated controls and camera system allow for smoother gameplay, enabling players to better appreciate the dungeon’s design.

Additional quality-of-life enhancements include expanded dialogue, the option to hum songs via the Switch 2’s microphone, and more subtle notifications from Link’s fairy companion Navi. These changes collectively aim to enhance accessibility without diluting the original game’s essence.

This remake signals Nintendo’s willingness to revisit its classic Zelda formula, which contrasts with the open-world design popularized by Breath of the Wild. It demonstrates that traditional, linear Zelda adventures still hold appeal and can be revitalized for new generations of players. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 promises to deliver a nostalgic yet fresh experience that bridges the franchise’s storied past and evolving future.
