Reddit begins testing ads in search results to boost revenue from existing users as AI-powered Google Search reduces referral traffic and user growth stalls.
Reddit has started testing advertisements within its search results pages, aiming to increase revenue from its existing user base amid concerns over declining traffic and slowing growth. This move was announced shortly after the company warned investors about a decrease in search traffic referrals and a revenue forecast below expectations. The platform's new advertising test allows select advertisers to display ads tailored to the context of user search queries, such as espresso machine ads appearing for searches like "espresso station" or office furniture for "home office setup".
This initiative comes as Reddit faces challenges stemming from changes in how users find content online, particularly the impact of Google's AI-powered search features. Google's AI enhancements now provide answers directly on search results pages, diminishing clicks to external sites like Reddit. This shift has contributed to Reddit's flat global daily active user count, which stood at 130.3 million in the third quarter, and a decline in U.S. daily active users from 53.2 million in the previous quarter to 50.7 million.
Financially, Reddit's third-quarter report showed revenue and earnings per share surpassing Wall Street estimates, yet the company's stock declined following lower-than-expected guidance for the fourth quarter, projecting revenue between $1 billion and $1.03 billion compared to analysts' expectations of $1.05 billion.
To enhance ad effectiveness and protect content, Reddit plans to transition to a logged-in user experience gradually, starting outside the U.S. This change serves to curb unauthorized AI scraping and improve ad targeting by leveraging richer user data. According to Reddit, logged-in users provide more valuable signals that can result in better-targeted and more profitable advertisements.
Overall, Reddit's move to incorporate ads within search results represents a strategic response to evolving online content discovery patterns and the imperative to monetize its active user base more effectively amid a challenging competitive landscape shaped by AI advancements.
