Apple's updated App Store policy requires all dating and AI companion apps containing sexual or romantic content to be rated 18+, enhancing protections for minors starting November 16.

Apple has announced a significant update to its App Store policies aimed at strengthening protections for minors using the platform. Effective November 16, 2026, all apps that offer dating services or features involving romantic or sexual content — including AI companion applications — will be required to carry an 18+ age rating. This measure is part of Apple's broader effort to restrict minors' access to potentially sensitive content online.

In communication with developers, Apple emphasized that the updated rules will necessitate new content descriptors to ensure that applications are appropriately rated based on their features. While most mainstream dating platforms already restrict usage to adults, this policy explicitly incorporates AI companion apps, which have gained popularity among younger users. AI apps like Character.AI and Replika allow users to create virtual companions, including friendships and romantic or sexual interactions, often blurring the lines between gaming and social connection.

Notably, AI-driven interactions that include sexual or romantic themes will now trigger the stricter age rating, potentially affecting millions of users globally. Last year, xAI introduced 3D animated AI companions with unlockable NSFW capabilities — an example illustrating why Apple is moving to tighten control in this area. Top AI companion apps have been downloaded over 220 million times worldwide on the Apple App Store and Google Play, underscoring the scale of this change.

Additionally, Apple's new policy requires apps that share users' physical locations with others to explicitly disclose this functionality in their content descriptors. This aims to mitigate privacy risks, particularly ensuring users know when their real-time location is being shared, a concern heightened in social and relationship-focused applications.

Apple has noted exceptions in certain jurisdictions. For instance, in Brazil, family location-sharing apps may obtain an official rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security instead of defaulting to an age 16+ label. This localized adaptation aligns policy with regional laws.

This policy adjustment follows Apple's recent global rollout of age assurance technologies alongside enhanced parental controls and child safety measures. With rising scrutiny over minors' exposure to adult content and privacy issues within digital platforms, Apple's move reflects an ongoing commitment to create a safer App Store environment. As AI companion apps continue evolving, these new rules establish clearer boundaries to prevent underage users from accessing content they deem inappropriate or potentially harmful.
