Apple introduces Audio Intelligence features in beta for the Apple Watch Series 12, enabling users to rewind recent conversations with text snippets and receive AI-generated summaries, balancing functionality with privacy protections.

Apple has begun beta testing new AI-powered "Audio Intelligence" features for the Apple Watch Series 12, as part of the iOS 27.3 update rolled out initially to developers. These features, first announced at Apple's September Surprise and Shine event, aim to enhance how users interact with spoken information by enabling rewind and recap capabilities for conversations, alongside sound and song recognition.

The new functionality includes four opt-in tools. The sound recognition assists deaf and hard-of-hearing users by identifying important sounds like sirens or doorbells. Music recognition draws on Apple’s Shazam technology to identify songs playing nearby.

More notably, the Live Rewind and Siri Recaps features focus on human conversations. Live Rewind lets users double-press the Apple Watch’s digital crown to view a 15-second text snippet of recent speech, useful for catching missed details such as directions or menu items. An auditory chime and on-screen animation indicate that recording occurred, addressing privacy concerns by making bystanders aware. If users do not save the snippet, it is deleted automatically after 30 seconds. There is also an "Ask Siri" option directly under the snippet for clarifications on terms or concepts heard.

Siri Recaps extends this ambient listening further by generating concise, high-level summaries of conversations. Rather than transcribing word-for-word or identifying speakers, it produces brief sentences and bullet points highlighting key details such as dates, deadlines, or pricing information. Designed to support scenarios like meetings or personal sessions, the feature helps users retain essential information without needing to take manual notes. It respects privacy by not recording when headphones are used or noise canceling is active, and excludes sensitive data such as government identifiers or financial information from its summaries.

Recaps are reviewed by users, who can choose to save them to apps like Notes or Journal; otherwise, the AI-generated summaries self-delete within seven days. Users can enable Siri Recaps manually or set schedules for when it operates, such as during work hours, and can disable it anytime via Control Center.

The technology relies on the integrated S11 chip, a secure enclave in the Apple Watch hardware that processes raw audio securely without accessibility from the operating system. Audio is encrypted and sent to the paired iPhone, where on-device AI distills conversation into condensed text. This text is then securely sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system to generate recaps before being deleted immediately, ensuring user privacy. All data syncing between devices remains encrypted and inaccessible to Apple.

Apple asserts these features do not adversely affect battery life and will become available to the wider public following further beta testing. The rollout represents a significant step in applying AI to improve user experience with wearable technology while maintaining strong privacy safeguards.
