Uber has extended its use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work from 1,000 users to its entire 30,000-strong workforce to enhance various workflows across departments.

Uber and OpenAI have announced a significant expansion in their partnership, with Uber now providing its entire global workforce of approximately 30,000 employees access to ChatGPT Work, an enterprise AI tool introduced by OpenAI in July. Earlier this year, Uber conducted a pilot involving about 1,000 employees from diverse teams such as finance, operations, and product, with 80% of these early users being non-engineers. These employees utilized ChatGPT Work for tasks including analyzing complex operational data to identify trends and craft recommendations, localizing training materials for different languages and markets, and creating personalized dashboards to manage daily responsibilities.

Following the success of this pilot, Uber is scaling the deployment company-wide, though it has not yet defined fixed usage protocols for employees. Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s Vice President of Engineering, explained that the company aims to make robust AI tools widely accessible while allowing teams flexibility to experiment. Earlier in the year, Uber paired 30 AI engineers with various teams for two-week projects to automate key job functions, revealing substantial potential when technical AI expertise is combined with deep job knowledge.

Uber plans to monitor how employees engage with ChatGPT Work and assess workflow developments to gauge productivity improvements. These insights will inform broader AI integration strategies across the business. While Uber declined to disclose financial details of the rollout, they noted close collaboration with OpenAI to embed the chatbot effectively within their operations.

OpenAI has rapidly expanded its enterprise AI offerings, transitioning from a primarily consumer-oriented service to securing business customers amidst growing competition from firms like Anthropic. Uber's broad adoption of ChatGPT Work exemplifies this trend toward corporate AI integration.
