Mistral has released the weights of its trillion-parameter AI model, Mistral Large 4, enabling organizations to deploy advanced cybersecurity AI with improved control and efficiency.

French artificial intelligence company Mistral has publicly released the weights for its trillion-parameter open-source model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), also known as “Le Chonk.” This release allows governments and enterprises to independently download and deploy the model, granting them greater sovereignty over their cybersecurity defenses. The weights, which constitute the core learned parameters of the AI, are accessible through Hugging Face and Mistral’s API.

This move intensifies competition between open-weight AI developers like Mistral and proprietary providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Mistral’s Chief Executive Officer, Arthur Mensch, emphasizes that AI should act as a tool for empowerment rather than dominance. By providing an open-weight model, Mistral aims to enable organizations to maintain control over their data and AI security capabilities without external dependencies.

ML4 reportedly achieves state-of-the-art performance benchmarks while requiring significantly less computing power and capital investment compared to closed-lab models. When compared to GLM-5.3, a top-tier Chinese open-weight AI system known for cybersecurity applications, ML4 uses 47% fewer tokens per task, marking a substantial improvement in efficiency.

Additionally, ML4 ranks ahead of all other open models in agentic coding tasks according to Artificial Analysis’ Coding Agent Index, a recognized AI benchmarking platform.

Pierre Stock, Mistral’s Vice President of Science, explained that releasing the model’s weights empowers organizations to access frontier intelligence for defending against cyberattacks with no risk of service suspension, as can occur with closed models. The open-weight nature also allows deployment directly within an entity’s own IT environment to identify, coordinate, and respond to security incidents in real time.

Stock stresses the importance of democratizing this technology, enabling broad adoption to strengthen global cybersecurity ecosystems amid rising cyber threats and the possibility of adversaries misusing AI. While acknowledging the challenges presented by rogue AI agents, he advises a measured approach, viewing secure AI deployment as an achievable but complex problem.

Overall, Mistral Large 4 represents a significant step towards open, efficient, and controllable AI-powered cybersecurity solutions for public and private sectors worldwide.
