Apollo Global Management's chief economist reports that AI investments have not improved profit margins or productivity in major non-tech companies, highlighting challenges in applying AI beyond the technology industry.

Despite widespread enthusiasm and heavy investment in artificial intelligence across industries, recent analysis by Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, indicates that AI has yet to translate into meaningful financial gains for major corporations outside the technology sector. Slok's assessment focused on the S&P 493, which excludes leading tech giants such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla, and found that both profit margins and revenue per worker remain stagnant.

Slok points out that while tech companies have harnessed AI to their advantage, broader corporate America struggles to convert advancements from natural language processing and machine learning into increased revenue growth and improved profitability. The economist highlights that AI excels as a computational tool but falls short where nuanced business judgment is concerned.

"AI does not understand accountability, trust, culture, unwritten rules, ethical trade-offs or fairness, all of which shape reputational risk and ultimately drive revenue growth and profit margins," Slok noted. This underlines the complexity of applying AI-driven automation and analytics in environments that require leadership decisions influenced by intangible human factors.

Supporting these findings, recent independent studies have also documented the absence of clear productivity improvements attributable to AI adoption in many sectors. This suggests that while AI continues to evolve technologically, its effective integration into diverse business models remains a significant challenge.

The analysis invites a more cautious assessment of AI's economic impact beyond the tech industry and raises questions about the timeframe and strategies through which AI might begin to enhance financial outcomes at scale in traditional industries. For now, AI’s promise of revolutionizing corporate finance and operations outside of technology remains unfulfilled, emphasizing the importance of factors beyond raw computational intelligence in business success.
