U.S. intelligence scrutinized a Singapore AI cloud executive close to Nvidia's CEO over fears she might be a Chinese spy amid chip export concerns.

The U.S. government has investigated a potential Chinese espionage plot targeting Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, focusing on Alice Huang, a top executive at Singapore-based AI cloud company Megaspeed. According to anonymous sources cited by the New York Times and reported by TechCrunch, U.S. intelligence agencies monitored Alice Huang for about a year due to concerns that her close relationship with Jensen Huang could be exploited to gather sensitive information about Nvidia's strategic plans.

Alice Huang was frequently seen alongside the Nvidia CEO during business dinners in Singapore, raising suspicions that she might have been gaining insight into Nvidia’s efforts to expand shipments of advanced technology to China amid U.S. export restrictions. However, Nvidia has officially denied these allegations. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that Jensen Huang's interactions with Ms. Huang were consistent with normal engagements with regional customers and involved only routine business information, not trade secrets or national security-related data.

This scrutiny comes in the wake of a 2025 Commerce Department investigation which examined Megaspeed’s role in potentially circumventing U.S. AI chip export controls by reselling restricted Nvidia chips to Chinese firms. At that time, Alice Huang served as one of Megaspeed's top executives.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between U.S. export regulations on advanced technologies and efforts by Chinese entities to acquire such technologies through complex supply chains. While suspicions of espionage remain unproven, the situation underscores the challenges faced by global tech companies operating amid geopolitical conflicts and export controls. The story is evolving, with no conclusive outcome disclosed yet regarding intelligence findings or legal actions against the individuals or firms involved.
