Microsoft is inviting eligible employees across various global units to take a voluntary exit deal as it aims to reduce costs and increase AI spending. The program targets around 60,000 staff, about a quarter of its worldwide workforce.

Microsoft has initiated a voluntary exit program for selected employees across several areas of its global operations, aiming to manage costs while intensifying investment in artificial intelligence (AI). According to a recent report from Mobile World Live, this program provides financial support and career transition resources and is available for a limited time.

The initiative targets approximately 60,000 employees worldwide, representing more than a quarter of Microsoft’s total 223,000 full-time staff as of June 30, 2026, according to the company’s fiscal year 2026 annual report. Eligible employees are in Canada, India, the UK, and the US and fall within level 70 and below in Microsoft’s organizational hierarchy.

Microsoft’s Chief People Officer Amy Coleman indicated that eligibility and participation depend on the needs and priorities of individual business units. The voluntary exit offer applies to teams including Copilot, AI experiences, finance, human resources, Xbox, and Windows + Devices. However, employees in marketing, commercial business, and security sectors are reportedly excluded.

Coleman described the program as providing "a new choice" for those considering career changes, emphasizing it as part of Microsoft’s broader effort to address varying business needs and workforce planning. This follows earlier actions this year, such as voluntary buyouts offered to about 9,000 US employees and 4,800 job cuts announced in July connected to the restructuring of its Xbox gaming division and divestment of four studios.

These personnel adjustments occur concurrently with Microsoft’s significant commitment to expanding AI capabilities, including investments in data centers and semiconductor chips. The company forecasted capital expenditures reaching $175 billion for calendar year 2026, a figure that has drawn attention concerning the balance of investment returns.

This voluntary exit program illustrates Microsoft’s strategic approach to optimize its workforce and resource allocation as it accelerates AI development amidst evolving market demands and competitive pressures.
