Google is investing $17 billion to establish its first data center in Wyoming, employing cutting-edge fuel cell and carbon capture technology to minimize environmental impact while creating thousands of local jobs and supporting community development.

Google has announced a significant $17 billion investment to build its first data center in Wyoming, marking a major expansion of its infrastructure in the United States. This new facility, located in Laramie County, aims to deliver substantial economic and environmental benefits to the region.

The project is designed around innovative energy solutions, including a commercial-scale, 702 MW fuel cell installation—the largest of its kind planned to date—that converts natural gas into electricity efficiently via electrochemical reactions. These fuel cells, manufactured by Bloom Energy within the United States, will incorporate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The CCS system will capture a large majority of carbon emissions for permanent underground storage at the nearby Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub operated by Tallgrass Energy.

This effort builds on Google’s prior CCS projects in the U.S., bringing its total contracted CCS capacity close to one gigawatt. Moreover, Google is partnering with energy companies Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, and American Electric Power (AEP) to source power from gas generators and to explore retrofitting combined cycle turbines with CCS capabilities. The integrated approach seeks to enhance energy efficiency in powering data centers and to reduce the carbon footprint traditionally associated with natural gas generation.

Water conservation is another critical element of the project. The Wyoming data center will utilize air cooling technology to significantly curtail water usage, aligning with Google's commitments to responsible water stewardship and local water replenishment efforts.

Beyond technology, Google is committed to fostering community growth in Cheyenne and surrounding areas. The company has engaged with local residents and stakeholders through meetings, collecting feedback focused on economic opportunities, education, workforce development, and infrastructure. Anticipated benefits include the creation of thousands of jobs, hundreds of millions in local property taxes, and substantial support for K-12 education, STEM initiatives, skilled trades training, and entrepreneurship.

To address broader community concerns related to data center expansion, Google and its partners are establishing a Community Council tasked with developing solutions to support Cheyenne amid ongoing growth.

Google’s investment reflects a long-term commitment to both technological advancement and regional development, promising to integrate cutting-edge infrastructure with strong community partnerships in Wyoming for decades ahead.
