The New York Times Company is negotiating to purchase Letterboxd, a popular social platform for movie enthusiasts, for approximately $330 million, with plans to keep it operating independently.
The New York Times Company is engaged in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, a social networking service dedicated to film lovers, for a price around $330 million, according to a report by The New York Times. Letterboxd, known for its community-driven platform where users can review and share their favorite films, has attracted interest not only from the Times but also from entertainment giants Sony Pictures Entertainment and A24.
In discussions with the Times Company, there are plans for Letterboxd’s current co-founders to remain in leadership roles but to report to an executive within the Times organization. The deal envisions Letterboxd continuing as a standalone service for the foreseeable future, retaining its unique identity and user experience. Additionally, integration with The New York Times' advertising technology is anticipated, potentially enhancing monetization capabilities for the platform.
This potential acquisition follows The New York Times' recent strategy of expanding its portfolio through technology and content-focused purchases. Previous significant buys include the popular word game Wordle, acquired for a modest low seven-figure sum, the product review site Wirecutter for over $30 million, and the sports subscription service The Athletic for $550 million. The acquisition of Letterboxd would bolster the Times’ offerings to communities interested in specialized content and social interaction.
A spokesperson for the Times declined to comment on the negotiations, and representatives for Letterboxd and its current parent company, Tiny Ltd., have not responded to requests for comment. Should the deal close, it will strengthen The New York Times' foothold in digital social communities centered around niche interests, in this case, cinema enthusiasts worldwide.
