Bluesky saw its highest daily posts and likes of 2026 during the US midterm elections, nearly breaking its all-time single-day like record with significant spikes in user engagement and data traffic.
Bluesky, the microblogging platform often described as "Twitter for the left," experienced its peak user activity for the year during the 2026 United States midterm elections on November 4. The company reported a surge in posts, replies, likes, and new follows coinciding with the evening's election coverage.
CEO Toni Schneider highlighted a doubling of posts and likes on election day, reflecting a wave of both new users joining and returning participants becoming active again. According to COO Rose Wang, activity spiked between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Pacific Time, corresponding to the release of many election results.
Daily posts increased by 30% and likes by 70% compared to the previous 30-day averages. Additionally, clicks on links rose by 20%, indicating heightened user engagement beyond simple interactions. Bluesky's open-source data showed approximately 44 million likes, 4.8 million posts, and 2 million new follows on November 4, approaching the platform's all-time single-day like record of 45 million, set in November 2024.
Network data reflected this surge, with traffic peaking at 35.8 GB per second, 200% above normal levels. The platform's growth and activity spikes are connected to its user base's political leanings and history, notably increasing after Donald Trump's 2024 presidential victory and becoming particularly active during major Democratic wins in the 2026 midterms.
This electoral event demonstrated Bluesky's capacity to attract and engage a politically active community, driving record-breaking usage patterns and highlighting its evolving role in digital political discourse during high-stakes moments.
