Palo Alto Networks may acquire Clutch Security, an AI agent system access security startup, for $500 million plus milestones, reflecting growing AI-driven cybersecurity market activity.
Palo Alto Networks is reportedly in discussions to acquire Clutch Security, a startup specializing in securing the access of AI agents to corporate systems, for a cash price of $500 million alongside additional milestone-based payments, according to an informed source cited by TechCrunch. Founded three years ago, Clutch was last valued at $85 million during its $20 million Series A investment round led by Lightspeed and SignalFire in January 2025. The company is approaching $10 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), placing the potential acquisition valuation at roughly 50 times ARR, a common metric in software company deals.
This substantial valuation highlights the increasing attention on protecting software environments against threats enabled by AI-powered cyberattacks. A recent parallel can be seen with Upwind, an AI cloud infrastructure security firm that rebuffed a $400 million acquisition offer from DataDog, approximately 40 times its ARR.
The Clutch deal, if finalized, would mark Palo Alto Networks’ seventh acquisition within the year, continuing its strategy of integrating innovative technologies through acquisitions rather than in-house development. This approach aligns with the company’s response to the surge in AI-related cyber threats. Earlier in 2026, Palo Alto Networks acquired Console, an AI automation startup focused on IT help desk tasks, for around $500 million. Other notable acquisitions include Embrace for $325 million, observability platform Chronosphere for $2.95 billion, and the cybersecurity startup Koi for $231 million.
The competitive landscape in AI agent security also underscores increased merger and acquisition activity: Cyera acquired Oasis Security for $1 billion, and Cisco purchased Astrix for roughly $400 million. Both Oasis Security and Astrix, like Clutch, offer solutions to manage AI agents’ access to sensitive systems.
Neither Palo Alto Networks nor Clutch Security have publicly commented on the acquisition talks. If completed, this deal would further cement Palo Alto Networks’ positioning in combating AI-facilitated cyber risks through targeted investments in emerging AI security technologies.
